Jagadissen Munisami - BEng Electronic and Communications Engineering & MSc Digital Communications Networks

My choice for London Met dates back to when I started my undergraduate course. As a fresh school leaver, I was faced with the dilemma of choosing a course I wanted to study. I was interested in careers in telecommunications, but simultaneously had a soft spot for electronics. The decision became obvious when I saw a course that only London Met was offering – BEng Electronic and Communications Engineering.

I checked the course structure, liked it, and applied straight away. After my degree, I realised that my employability prospects in my country, as a new graduate with little work experience we re not very bright. So I carried on with an MSc in Digital Communications Networks. I am currently in the second year of my PhD in Communications Engineering, something I had never imagined myself undertaking before coming to the UK.

I found both my undergraduate and Masters courses very well structured. The academic staff are all experts in their particular fields, and extremely cooperative and dedicated to their work. My PhD supervisor especially has been of great help to me. He is very committed and has provided me with priceless support and expert guidance.

The University also gave me the opportunity to go for a summer placement in my second year of my undergraduate degree. Immediately after that, I was employed as a part-time electronics engineer for about three years, by the same company. This was an enriching experience for me and it gave me an insight into the industry. At present, as a research student, I am given the opportunity to work as a part-time lecturer. Besides enhancing my CV, this is also providing me with excellent work experience.

My immediate plan is to complete my PhD, then I would really like a career in research in the telecommunications industry, although teaching is another prospect which I am looking forward to.
