About University of Central Lancashire
The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) is one of the largest universities in the UK with student and staff community approaching 35,000, over 500 undergraduate courses and approximately 180 taught postgraduate programmes.
UCLan’s curriculum is underpinned by research of world-leading and international standing in areas of Business, Health, Humanities and Science and a focus on graduate employability is at the heart of everything it does.
The University has an established reputation for providing its students with an outstanding student experience and is currently in the process of spending £120 million on new buildings and facilities to enhance teaching, learning and leisure activities.
The Students’ Union building '53 Degrees' is one of the largest and best resourced in the UK. New facilities currently under construction include a £15 million indoor sports centre and a £12.5 million building to house the University’s renowned forensic science and chemistry courses. Both facilities will be open in 2011.
Officially opened in 2008, a £15 million ‘Media Factory’ not only provides state-of-the-art facilities for digital media and performing arts students but also a business incubator facility. These incubators allow students, North West university graduates, budding entrepreneurs and small businesses to re-invest their talents and establish innovative and creative business ideas.
In 2010 the Higher Education Business and Community Interaction Survey acknowledged UCLan as one of the country’s most entrepreneurial and business friendly universities. The University came top in the North West and fifth in the UK for generating student start-up businesses with 300 registered student start-ups. 131 were established in the past year alone.
There are over 100 different nationalities represented among UCLan's international and domestic student body and in China, UCLan is the leading UK university in terms of students studying on its programmes in-country.
In 2010 UCLan was named as the North West’s top modern University in all the national newspaper league tables and was admitted to the prestigious QS World University Rankings. It is one of only 23 universities to appear in this year’s rankings for the first time, and is the only UK university to be newly admitted. Just 53 UK universities are included in the whole table with just four in the North West.

Testimonial from a Mauritian Student
Shiva Mauree - BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy
I had applied to UCLan for my final year on the BSc(Hons) Physiotherapy course after having obtained accreditation of prior learning. It was the first time I was going to live outside of Mauritius and I was actually looking forward to the inevitably new lifestyle that studying in Preston was going to bring. And I was not disappointed.
Preston was a great setting for me- I especially liked the fact that it looked more quiet and peaceful than Manchester where I had spent a couple of weeks before coming here. There are two parks within 20 minutes walk from the university and those were nice places to spend your summer days at.
You can access the university library, the buildings for my classes, the halls for accommodation, town center (shops!) and train station with just 10-15 minutes walk. It was great having all these so close, since you have to take care of everything when living on your own.
Academically, the support was fantastic. I obtained written feedbacks on assignments and could arrange one-to-one appointments with a personal tutor (a lecturer within the course) to discuss written work you have already or will submit. This constant two-way traffic between students and lecturers allowed me to make out the most out of my marked assignments and module aims by constantly improving and knowing where and what to improve.
Other services I have used at UCLan are the International office where I first sent my application to. I have also used 'Futures' ,another university facility which I found simply great, especially now that I have graduated, with direct help with interviews (through arranged mock interviews) and CV writing (through feedback). The regular online seminars they organize are also very good.
Entertainment-wise, the university gym (yes, gym is entertainment for me!) is quite small though I read that a new facility was going to be opened sometime this year. There are 2 leisure centers (30 minutes walk, 10 minutes bus) where you can access swimming pools and more exercise equipment. Cinemas and a bowling center are located in the Capitol Centre via a 20 minutes ride on the bus. That's about all my entertainment there and which was more than enough for me to be frank. Not much into night clubs...
My experience at UCLan was a really good one. Pertaining specifically to my course, the support I obtained while doing my clinical placements was incredible. I was able to integrate successfully within the health care delivery system in the UK and perform to good standards. I would definitely recommend UCLan to anybody wanting pursue higher education in my field.
